I’m engaged! #TiWiWf

Today is a brand new day, a brand new job, a brand new future!

I don’t talk much about the ‘day job’. Why? Well … ’cause it has never been a place where I was so excited to go to work that I wanted everyone to know where I spent 8 hours of every day. Well … back in April, I learned that my ‘day job’ was coming to an end.

Yup, for the 2nd time in my life, I was on the lay-off list. The first time came in October 2001, right after the 9/11 attacks. Then, I worked for a dot-com that bombed big ($36million in venture capital ended without a single client. To steal from Kelly Said and her eyeballs O_o). So, this time, I worked for an international company who just decided it was time to do away with my department.

This was announced to me on April 20th, but I’d ‘seen the signs’ for quite some time.

Now, I’m a well rounded individual, as many of us are. I have a Math degree (go ahead, say it … huh? O_o ) and I have an MBA. And, I have 12 years of experience in corporate America, plus I own my own company and the list goes on. A wide variety of skills any company could use, right?

Except the one I worked for because we could not, out of all the possibilities, find a place for me.

And thus my end date was set for April 30th.

10 DAYS after I ‘got word’.

10 days!

So a day or so after that, my boss called and said, “you know what? 10 days is kinda short, how about we end May 31st” and I went … Okay! because who’s going to give up mortgage money?

Again, to borrow from Kelly’s stash of crazy eyeball icons: o_O

At the same time, my company had started working with this really cool, creative, trendy, high concept company to help staff some projects. As it turned out, this neato company was growing and it was time to add a particular position.

In fact, in meeting with them for my ‘real job’ we got to talking, one thing led to another and no, we’re not getting married … we’re just engaged!

That is … I’ve been engaged as their Program Manager for all learning projects!

Woohoo! I’m SO excited.

You see … way back in the stone ages (1996) when I had my first job out of college … I worked for a woman (LOVED HER!) who pushed me and challenged me and I started building training for software at 22 years old … for software I had no idea what it was. Well … that job led to another and another until in 2002, I worked for a company building training exclusively. And that went on to building simulation training. And that led to getting out of training altogether and doing photography full time. Then other factors brought me back to the writing side of training and now … at long last … I am back to what I LOVE TO DO!

I LOVE to manage training projects. I love to bring together a group of developers, creatives, designers and take words, imagery and technology and mesh it into something cohesive and beautiful that you and I can learn from.

Wait … wait …wait … this sounds uncannily like writing a book and delivering it on a Kindle. 😉

So there are symbiotic elements to both, but I have to say, I LOVE the fact that Weejeelearning (yes, that’s it’s name) and I have connected … that over the course of months of discussion and weeks of negotiation and waiting and waiting (ha! sounds like publishing) I have found my spot.

There is NOTHING like have a job you love, working with people who’re awesome and wanting to go to work. It’s even better when you can go to work in your PJs and bunny slippers, sit in your house and pet the cat while on a conference call.

So today, I celebrate. I am also immensely thankful. I have a job. The next level up the corporate ladder in terms of title, another notch of responsibility and with a company where I’ll have a LOT of input on their growth, development and future success.

Here’s to a great 2nd half of 2012!

Happy New Year
