{Blog Chain} Interview with a … vampire?
No! Of course not. I have very few vampires in any of my stories. Actually … I think a whopping 2 in total across 11 books because well … they just don’t interest me much. 🙂 What can I say?
No, this Interview is a little different because I’m part of the April Absolute Write Blog Chain. This month, we’ve got a 2-parter … 50 words on a main character and then have that character interview me!
Whoa … you might say. How is that going to happen? Well, you can get a feel for it by visiting the person before me (Pezie) and then after me (Claire Gillian), but be sure to read all the entries. Some are quite comical. You won’t be sorry.
Now, on to the task at hand!
Part 1 – The Character : Charley Randall
Charley is the main character in my soon-to-be-published novel, Little White Lies. She’s a shape-shifter, madly in love with a man who can’t know about her gift. She’s also about to run out of time to tell him how she feels, for reasons she can’t explain right now (yeah, yeah, it’s in the book 😉 ). It’s love, though, that she’s focused most on.
Part 2 – The Interview : Aimee Laine
“So, Aimee…” Charley crosses her legs and peers over a pair of glasses she’s perched on her nose. I assume it’s her attempt to play ‘the serious psychologist’ — since she can. “Your bio says you’re a romantic at heart. Does that influence your writing?”
“Of course.”
“In what way?”
I lean back into the couch opposite her, wishing I looked half as good as she does for her two hundred years. Shape-shifters have it made. “Well … it means I’m always looking for the happily ever after. I always want the guy and the girl to get together.”
“Always?” She tilts toward me, her eyes narrow.
I swallow the lump in my throat. “Um … yeah … always.” My mind is scrambling to make sure I haven’t just stuck my foot in my mouth with my absolute.
“Why then — “ Her tone turns dark and deep. “– did you force Wyatt and me apart so much?” Her arm twitches. A visible shiver runs through her.
Uh oh. What’d I say? Is she turning into something? How is that possible if I write her every word?
“What would possess you … the romantic … “ Her tone is a bit condescending. “… to bring us together four times and then put that — that — thing in our way.”
I know what she’s trying to say and try to hide the smile. She’s completely lost her professional persona. Across from me sits a woman desperate for me to tell her why, if I really believe in love, would I torture her so much.
“Charley,” I say, in my most friendly of tones. “When my husband and I started out, we had one year together and then three apart. It took another two years together before we could even make a go at marriage. Six years of waiting. Just because I’m a romantic doesn’t mean I’m going to make it easy on you.”
Her shoulders fall. “But you could have.”
“And then you wouldn’t have had such a great story to tell. When I’m old and gray, I want to be able to tell my grandkids that I met my husband when I was 14, how we never once broke up, but weren’t even in the same city for three years. I want them to know it takes work to make a relationship thrive. But, when it does? When I look at him? His smile still takes my breath away. I have etched the blue of his eyes into my brain. I know his smell, taste, touch … everything about him. I’ve loved him since the moment I met him.”
A smile crosses her lips. “I want that.”
“I know.” A deep sigh escapes.
“Will I get that? Will you make sure Wyatt and I get together? Please?” Her hands fold together in a plea. “Pleeeeeeeeeeease?”
“Love always wins, Charley.”
On that, I am sure.

Oh, Charley! Everyone wants that. But Aimee is right, it is work. I think I tortured my poor husband for a year with the “friend thing” before we finally got together. Now we have 3 kids. You’ve just got to stick it out through all the tough stuff before the happy ending. Can’t wait to read what happens with you and Wyatt :)!
Doesn’t she just sound so pitiful? 🙂 🙂 She’ll get her moment. 🙂 I promised her. 🙂 Though I am evil, so I could be lying. 😉
I know Charley well enough for this to be so freakin’ hilarious, and I nearly spat out my coffee. Hehehehehee. And your man still takes your breath away ::sigh:: Must be something about that shortened name I give him, eh?<<sorry, if only Aimee has the faintest idea what I'm talking about 🙂
Um … yeah … what you talkin’ ’bout? 🙂 LOL 🙂
That sounds exactly like Charley. I half expected you to make her your body double for the interview. Wouldn’t that have freaked you out? LOL Lovely interview…we really got to see YOU while still seeing Charley.
Ha! Didn’t even think about doing that! And yeah, that woulda been a little freaky!
Charley did a great job with the interview AND the pleading. Give that girl her HEA, Aimee!
She will, Diane, I promise! 🙂 (She just doesn’t believe me, ‘cuz I’m awfully mean to her). 🙂
This is a wonderful post, Aimee. It makes me go awwwwwwwwwwww. I hope you give Charley what she wants.
Thanks, Deanna! 🙂 She will. She will. 🙂 Maybe. 🙂 HA!
Poor Charley! I’d say give her some slack, but where’s the fun in that? :p And judging from your last line, she’ll get her end. Sometimes you have to go through the thorns to get to the roses.
Definitely have to go through the thorns. 🙂
Great excerpt, and I do the same thing to my characters…but I DO give them the happily ever after, most of the time. 😉
Gotta give ’em an HEA … at least sometimes. 🙂
I can definitely relate to both sides of the interview! And have a similar conflict with a current character of mine.
Conflict is good, right? 🙂 That’s what makes the story? 🙂 🙂
200 years old and still waiting? Give her a break. I’m on her side, you cruel writer you. C’mon, give the girl a break 😉
Great, now you’ve got me convinced she’s real.
LOVE the cover, by-the-way.
She’ll get her break … eventually. Maybe. 🙂 Thanks for the cover compliment! I LOVE it, too! 🙂
