First Impressions: The Hidden by Jessica Verday
About the front:
What first caught my eye with this cover was the color. I am a HUGE **HUGE** fan of raspberry. Not only is the background my favorite color, but so is the ring in the middle. Now the title and the ring tell me nothing except I can interpret a couple things. For example, is the ring hidden? Is the ring supposed to tie someone to something. What is it about the ring that’s so important it gets center stage? I’ll be waiting, to find that out.
I’m also wondering at the dark ‘stuff’ under the ring. It looks like leaves a little to me. But are they?
I guess overall, the cover tells me nothing, but I really think it’s pretty.
Now let’s look at what the back says:
A love that knows no bounds.
Abbey knows that Caspian is her destiny. Theirs is a bond that transcends even death. But as Abbey finally learns the full truth about the dark fate that links her to Caspian and ties them both to the town of Sleepy Hollow, she suddenly has some very hard choices to make. Caspian may be the love of her life, but is that love worth dying for?
Beautifully spun, emotionally gripping, and irresistibly romantic, The Hidden will leave you breathless.
Does it match? Front to Back without the in between?
So first, I gotta say, I hate (HATE with a passion) when blurbs interject opinion about how great a book is. Let me the reader determine that by reading it. Put reviews with the reviews. Keep the blurb to the blurb.
Now that being said, I have no idea how the cover ties in with the blurb. So, I’m interested because of the romantic plot. I love when two people are meant for each other — truly meant for each other — that it crosses death makes it even more intriguing.
But how is this different than every other paranormal romance out there? I can’t tell yet what’s so unique about this one and again, while the cover is pretty? It doesn’t give me any sense either.
Where I’d read it
Not sure. I’m kinda torn on this one. I was totally in love with the cover, but now I’m not sure on the story. May not read this one after all. Not sure.

I haven’t read the first book in the series so I wouldn’t read this one right away. But I agree, the color on the cover is amazing!
I’ve got to say the cover would not be enough to make me pick this one up–not even to read the blurb. Nothing about it–not even the title tells me that this is paranormal, and I think there has to be ‘something’ about it that at least hints as such if that’s what it is. As for what’s hidden? I assumed–due to the cover–that whatever was hidden would be hidden within the ring, because my mind HAS to find a connection between that image and the title. Also, even if you’d managed to get me as far as reading the blurb, I’m not sure I’d pick it up. It tells me so little of what to expect that I just have no ‘feel’ for whether ot not I would feel an urge to place this on my bookshelf. So, I dunno. I’m a little unsure over this one.
I love the color, too, but the cover in general wouldn’t make me pick up the book. The blurb wouldn’t, either. Like you, I’m not a fan of self-praise mixed with the blurb. In fact, it’s pretty much a turn-off. Though, if the blurb was WOW, then I’d still read it, but this one was just kind of meh.
Great comments, ladies! 🙂
I have to say Aimee, this is a cool idea! Judging book covers compared to the copy on the back, what an awesome concept!
Not a romance fan, I wouldn’t normally pick this up to begin with. That said, if I’m intrigued by the cover and in reading the back find out it is romance, with a unique or interesting twist, I would read it.
The first line of the blurb threw me right out. “Abbey knows that Caspian is her destiny.” Really? How can she possibly know that? She can suspect it, she can even ‘feel’ it, but know? I’m not sold on the cover either.
For all I know, it could be a great book, but with two strikes against it…
Glad you like the idea, Dale! 🙂 And glad you’re in on the fun of the ‘review’! 🙂
